Great news if you love Lotuses but hate that they only seem to have a racing presence overseas: Yesterday, Group Lotus announced the formation of Lotus Sport USA, a team that will begin testing at a new facility at the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research later this year and join IMSA for a full schedule in 2012.
You can go ahead and thank two gentlemen for the announcement. The first team principal, Ian Dawson, worked with Team Lotus in the early ‘70s and later helped found the only Lotus privateer team ever in Formula One, Rebaque F1. The second team principal, John Pritzlaff has money and a banking background that will “bring structure and oversight to the racing program.” Lotus motorsport director Claudio Berro continues, “With Ian Dawson and John Pritzlaff on board, I’m sure Lotus Sport USA will go from strength to strength.”
Once the team is up and running, they’ll focus on IMSA’s GT2 and LMP2 classes, with the Evora GTE starting things off, obviously in GT2. An official press release promises “the team will be announcing some innovative and exciting new partners to the program, including key personnel to support this long-term partnership.” Very interesting and mysterious, that.
