Volkswagen E-Bugster Concept Revealed Topless in Beijing

posted by on 23 April 2012 in Automotive News

We had heard that the Volkswagen E-Bugster concept originally shown at the Detroit Auto Show this past January had a removable hard top. In fact rumor has it there was discussion and debate about which way to show the car at Detroit and eventually it was decided to leave the top on and show the car at a later date with the top off. Well that time has come and Volkswagen has chosen to show the roof-less version at Auto China in Beijing.

Since it is the exact same concept car, sans roof, the specs remain the same. Powered by 85 kW electric motor, the E-bugster can reach 0-62 mph in 10.8 seconds and has a range of “at least” 111 miles according to VW. Battery charging can happen in as little as 35 minutes with the proper charging station.

While electric versions of the Beetle are a possibility in the future, producing the chop-top E-Bugster would be an expensive proposition as it would require a lower windshield and other revised sheet metal changes. However, Beetle fans can look forward to the Beetle Convertible coming this November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Still, there is part of us that would like to see the “Bugster” look come to production. The chop-top design just works on this thing.
