BMW Motorrad Announces Details of GS Trophy 2010 in South Africa
For the new model year, BMW introduced an updated R 1200 GS using the variable valve timing engine of the HP2 sportbike. It's also the bike's 30th birthday, something we covered a few weeks ago in a BMW GS Evolution article. What better way to celebrate these events than by holding an officially-run, multinational enduro race? We can't think of one.
The BMW GS Trophy event was first held two years ago, when the company picked teams from Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and the US and took them to Tunisia, where the American team went on to win a long and hard-fought race. This year's event should be just as epic, traveling through South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique. The number of teams grows just as the number of countries driven through does, with the defending champion USA being joined by others from Spain, Italy, Japan, Scandinavia Germany, the UK, Canada, and a home team from South Africa that could have an unfair advantage. The event happens in November, and lasts eight days through some very spectacular terrain.
If you're in the US and think you have what it takes to deserve this all-expenses-paid adventure, it isn't too late. Two GS owners and one journalist will be picked to represent the States, and the selections will be made at the Adventure Riders/GS Challenge at the RawHyde Adventures facility in Southern California form April 29-May 2.
