BMW Confirms Six-Cylinder K1600 Bikes for Production
At the EICMA show last fall in Turin, BMW showed an incredible inline six-cylinder motorcycle concept. We assumed back then that it was a thinly veiled version of an upcoming K-bike replacement, and sure enough, now comes news that the concept will become the K1600.
BMW is still being about coy about the details, but here is what we know. The next K-bike will be the highest evolution of the touring concept to date — think 7-series on two wheels. It'll pack lots of technology, including adaptive xenon headlamps, the Dynamic Traction COntrol system first fitted to the BMW S1000RR, and a TFT color display for the multi-function screen.
Presumably displacement will be 1.6 liters, but if BMW's car naming conventions are any clue, the "6" in "1600" may just reflect the number of cylinders. Output has been quoted at 160 hp at 7500 rpm, with 129 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. The engine is the lightest production six-cylinder motorcycle engine at 225 pounds, thanks in part to the company's commitment to lightweight materials and manufacturing techniques.
Here is an overview of highlights of the BMW K1600GT/GTL. We'll report more when we have it.
