Lego and Mercedes-Benz Create Mini Unimog, Largest Technic Model Ever
The Mercedes-Benz Unimog--one of the most impressive workhorses in the world--has never come to the US and we presume the miniature Technic version won't, either. But at least it will be a little bit easier for us to import. It goes on sale in Germany in August, at a price of 190 euros, to celebrate 60 years of the Unimog.
Even in model form, the Unimog is designed to go to work. This Technic model uses both an electric drive and pneumatics to drive and swing its crane. The gripper arm can rotate almost 360 degrees and actually works. When not needed, it also disassembles and can be repurposed as a snow plow up front, where a winch also lives. All four corners have real suspension and an engine underneath is realistic right down to the pistons. In all, the 1:12 scale Unimog U-400 has 2048 individual parts, which means that it should be enough of a challenge just to build once. It also makes it the largest Technic model ever sold. Meanwhile, the real Unimog celebrates its 60th birthday tomorrow, on June 3.
