Porsche Plans Festivities, Extra Access For New Museum's First Birthday

Those of you who've been reading Kilometer from the beginning will remember that we took a tour of the Porsche Museum back in October and had a seriously good time seeing the sights. But now we wish we would have waited and gone over next week, when the building celebrates its first birthday. To celebrate the occasion, special events have been planned.

First, Porsche will open the glass doors of the museum workshop, allowing visitors to go behind the scenes to visit the area where dying old Porsches are brought back to showroom condition. An event level of the building is also opened to the public, and there's a special presentation at the Porsche Cinema planned for the day. Generally, the cars are a look-don't-touch sort of display, but that changes a bit on the birthday as well. Visitors will be allowed to have their pictures taken sitting in a rare Porsche 911 Speedster.

There's even more action planned for motorsports fans. Porsche driver Marc Lieb will be on hand to chat with visitors and answer questions they may have. He'll also be signing autographs and will even be showing off race equipment and his driver's gear. A 2010 911 GT3 R will be on display, and a Porsche racing engineer will be alongside demonstrating how vehicle information is gathered on his laptop.

Since opening, the Porsche Museum has seen 530,000 visitors and guides have given 2555 tours. Because Porsche is detail-oriented, they've also noted that 14,326 steaks have been grilled at the museum's Christophorus Restaurant. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 31.
