Mercedes-Benz and Cigarette Racing Debut "AMG-Inspired" Boat
What better way to debut a new powerboat that can cut a 130 mph tear in the water's surface than to pair it, emotionally and visually, with the stunning new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG? No better way, if you ask Cigarette Racing. The company debuted its latest 46-foot Rider boat this week at the Miami show, and chose to work with Mercedes-Benz on the debut and the technology inside.
Additionally, Mercedes helped with the technology outside, as well. The boat wears a hand-applied coat of AMG ALUBEAM silver paint, the same color offered on the SLS AMG that is different from any other silver, looking almost fluid as it sits over bodywork. That's accomplished thanks to nanotechnology that allows the finish to use pigments of color measuring just 30 to 50 nanometers. The tiny pigments deliver an unprecedented luster. Contrasting with the silver is another custom Mercedes color, AMG Designo Mystic White Metallic. And of course, the job wouldn't be complete without a big AMG logo along each flank.
Inside, the boat uses marine-grade upholstery that's meant to resemble the two-tone Designo porcelain and white nappa leather of the SLS. You wouldn't want to get those materials wet, however, so there isn't a direct carryover. The interior is trimmed out beautifully and boasts all the latest in navigation techonology.
But the coolest thing about this boat sits beneath the rear hatch. No, it doesn't have a pair of AMG 6.2-liter V8s, as we dreamed it would. Those are far from powerful enough. Even Mercedes-Benz's twin-turbo V-12 wouldn't be a strong enough application. Instead, the boat uses a set of twin-turbo, 552 cubic-inch Mercury Racing engines producing 1350 hp each. Top speed, as we noted, is 130 mph, which is absolutely insane on water. Supposedly, AMG engineers helped on many elements including the propulsion system and rigging, along with more than 100 other new innovations. But we're pretty upset about one thing they skipped--where are the AMG wheels for the trailer? And those definitely don't look like summer tires.
