Mercedes-Benz Announces 20,000-mile Sprinter Camping Tour, Makes Us Envious
Last week, Rob Wilson and his wife Jan left on a camping trip that will take them 20,000 miles through the rest of 2010. Starting at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, the couple will head southwest before taking a hard right, cutting up the coast and not stopping until they can see Russia out one window and Sarah Palin's house through the other. From there, the couple will return to the lower 48 but stay north, cutting along the Canadian border, moving through one of our favorite destinations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and eventually hitting another water barrier in Maine. With the weather surely turning by that point, they'll finish up with a run down the eastern seaboard and back up to the final destination, an RV Industry show in Louisville, KY on November 30. By that point, Rob and Jan will most certainly hate one another. But they'll also have a ton of stories to tell, all of which can be read over at at SprinterTour.com.
Of course, this won't be your typical throw-the-tent-in-the-station-wagon affair, as the couple will be traveling in style with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter outfitted by the iconic Airstream RV company. Their "Interstate" model includes a galley, a TV, a propane generator, electric hookups, a 32-gallon fresh water tank, a water heater, a sink, and even a shower and toilet. Throw in a well-stocked bar and that's what we call "doing it right."
The website linked above will feature reports along the way, along with counters of the days and miles on the road. Additionally, the two will keep track of fuel economy delivered by the M-B 3.0-liter diesel, and as of us publishing this, it was at 18 mpg after seven days on the road. Make sure to follow their progress--we definitely will. For a full listing of the couple's stops, also visit their official site.
