Volkwagen Shows Off Five-Door Up!
When Volkswagen debuted its small car family at Frankfurt in September, the wildly different Up! variations all had one thing in common: two passenger doors. When we saw that, it seemed like an obvious choice, with the footprint of the car being too small to support more doors. But Volkswagen has proven otherwise, with a fresh batch of five-door Up! photos making their way on to the web.
Amazingly this has all been down without extending the wheelbase at all, simply cutting two more apertures into the bodywork and putting doors in its place. But that was all done without sacrificing safety for the rear passengers. Side airbags are still in place, as well as Isofix child seat preparation to keep the little ones anchored down. The Up! can also be ordered with City Emergency Braking, a system that automatically applies the brakes if it determines the car is about to run into something.
The car is expected to hit European showrooms in March, alongside the three-door cars, and will carry a $600 premium over the three-door car.
