Porsche Outlines Electric Car Development, Builds Three Electron-Fueled Boxsters

Porsche already has a hybrid setting fire to the racing world with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, and the company also has one normal folks can buy thanks to the new supercharged Cayenne S Hybrid. Today the company confirmed that these two models are just the beginning for an electrified future in Stuttgart.

You may also remember the stunning 918 Spyder concept from the Geneva show this past spring. It combined mid-engined sports car performance, gorgeous styling, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain producing over 600 hp but also sipping fuel slowly enough to deliver over 90 miles per gallon. That's pretty cool but honestly, if Porsche ends up building a car that looks that good, we'd settle for pedal- or even just foot-power.

In the near-term Porsche has already confirmed that a hybrid Panamera is on the way, but the more interesting news today is more long-term. Porsche engineers have apparently not only built test mules for future hybrid models, but they've also constructed three research cars wearing Boxster bodies but hiding beneath them purely electric powertrains. Those sound exciting — we just hope Porsche hires a sound engineer to make the electric powertrain make fake flat-six sounds.
