Mercedes-Benz Debuts SLS AMG Formula 1 Safety Car
In addition to just being cool, we're told the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is the most powerful car to ever accept the job of Formula 1 Safety Car. Still, we don't think that means it'll come anywhere close to keeping up with the race cars, but it'll at least get out there quick to slow them down. The SLS Gullwing replaces another Mercedes sports car, the SL63 AMG, while another wonderful piece of machinery, the C63 AMG Estate, will serve another term as F1 medical car. In addition to being a great team out there on the track, we also feel that the pair would make for a perfect two-car garage.
The Mercedes team thought of everything. Because of the high speeds at which the SLS will be driving, the LED light bar on the roof has been aerodynamically optimized. The headlights and taillights have white stroboscopic lights as further caution to the field, and a special license plate at the rear features 700 bright LEDs for additional safety in bad weather or night time racing. Additionally, two cameras are integrated into the car's exterior so that the approaching field of race cars can be monitored on a screen inside the cabin. Plus, the car just looks cool with all the lights.
