Ferrari Flambé: 458 Italia Recalled
With the recent occurrences of Ferrari's new 458 Italias going up in flames showing up all over the Internet, the question became how long would it be before Ferrari acknowledged the problem and offered a solution. Recalls are not something that occurs often at Ferrari, or at least the Italian supercar maker keeps their lips a bit tighter than, say, Toyota, to keep the brand from being tarnished.
But this morning, Ferrari did something very un-Italian, and manned up to the problem, offering a recall. Ferrari says that the issue stems from a type of adhesive that holds a heat shield inside the rear fender. Under high temperatures, the adhesive can ignite, which then leads to the larger engine fires. A new heat shield has been designed that negated the need for adhesive at all, and should keep things under normal, flame-free, operating temperatures.
