Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Coming to Paris Auto Show, But What About America?
Today marks the day that Chevrolet here in America is celebrating the launch of the new Cruze at its Lordstown plant in Ohio, so it seems strange that across the Atlantic, Chevrolet of Europe is already moving on to the next chapter of the Cruze story. The photos you see here were released today, and that's the new five-door hatchback Cruze you see in them. We think it isn't just far more practical than the four-door sedan just now hitting dealers in the U.S., it's far more attractive as well.
There are elements of some other cars visible in the Cruze's new rear end, including some DNA from GM's own Opel Astra, as well as some pillar design from the Subaru Impreza. But as a whole, we like the little Chevy's new butt. The rear seat will split 60/40 and with it locked in place, the Cruze will still hold 14 cubic feet of stuff. It goes on sale in Europe in the middle of next year, but nothing has been mentioned about sales in the US. History would tell us it isn't coming here, but with stiffer competition and the growing popularity of hatches like the Mazda3--not to mention Ford bringing a five-door Focus back--might push the General to make it happen.
