2010 Geneva Show: Mercedes-Benz Debuts New C220 and E250 CDI

While we are waiting for any single Mercedes-Benz E-class diesel to return to the States with the new generation car, European buyers will soon have two new diesel sedans to chose from in the next-generation of C220 CDI and E250 CDI. The brand has done some work to further reduce fuel consumption of each vehicle, and the changes are small but worth mentioning. Whereas last year's C220 drank 4.8 liters of diesel for every 100 kilometers, the new one drinks just 4.5 liters. Likewise, the E250 cuts its consumption from 5.8 liters to an amazing 4.9 liters.

Predictably, Mercedes-Benz engineers wouldn't free up this extra efficiency at the price of any performance, so each car is more powerful as well. The E250 produces 204 hp and a stout 369 lb-ft of torque, while the smaller C boasts 170 hp and 295 lb-ft. Either is quite impressive for a four-cylinder. Both cars use seven-speed automatic transmissions and automatic start-stop features for even more fuel savings. Both cars go on sale this fall in Europe, when they will join a shockingly huge 60-model BlueEFFICIENCY Mercedes-Benz lineup.
