2010 Geneva Show: Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept by Pininfarina
"For those who still like to dream in a car." That's how Pininfarina is billing its latest Alfa Romeo concept, which celebrates anniversaries for both Pininfarina and Alfa. It also represents a design proposal, somewhere under that hot roadster body, for a new 159 sedan and wagon.
The name might be a bit confusing, but it's meant to evoke the old Duetto nameplate (get it? TWOetto?) It was also a no-brainer that Pininfarina would go with a roadster body for its concept, seeing as how the company designed the iconic Alfa Romeo Spider. There's a lot of that car in this new design, but while it is both classic and captures a lot of Alfa history, we wouldn't call the 2uettottanta retro. It's quite modern but uses a timeless silhouette.
Both inside and out, the 2 captures something missing from so many new designs from our era of reaching for new ideas. The 2 is simple, classic, honest. It's a car that just screams "Get in and drive me." We love it.
Of course, the car should be rewarding on the road as well. The brakes, by Brembo, are carbon ceramic, and the tires were specially developed by Dunlop. Its engine is a 1750-cc turbocharged four driving the rear wheels, and that displacement is meant to inspire memories of the 1968 1750 Veloce. Really though, all of that doesn't even matter. The car belongs in a museum.
