2010 Geneva Show: 2011 Audi RS 5 Coupe

We've been waiting for the RS 5 to finally appear for some time, but we're at least happy that it is everything we were expecting. It debuts at Geneva this year with a high-revving 4.2-liter V8 cranking out an impressive 450 hp thanks to direct-injection technology. That peak power comes at a sky-high 8250 rpm, while peak torque, 317 lb-ft of it, rides a plateau between 4000 and 6000 rpm. That allows this 3800-pound coupe to blast from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155, unless you ask nicely, and Audi will increase it to its natural maximum of 174 mph. Fuel economy is estimated at a combined 22 mpg, which isn't bad for such a high-revving, high-powered eight-pot. It appears the only transmission offered will be a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That will be disappointing for some, but launches from a stop should be pretty shocking.

The RS 5's chassis advancements include all of the S4 and S5's latest in technology, including Sport Differential and Audi Drive Select. New to the RS 5 is a crown-gear center differential, which is self-locking and delivers higher efficiency in a more compact and lightweight package than other differentials.

Then there are the more obvious enhancements to the RS 5, the ones you can see for your own eye. The lower grilles up front are positively massive, as are the exhaust exits, tucked away inside a diffuser at the rear. Along with 20-inch wheels, all of these components add heft to what's already a very substantial-looking design. US availability hasn't been announced, but the car goes on sale this spring in Europe at a price of 77,700 Euros.
