HPA Motorsports will unveil its latest project car, a 1991 Jeep YJ outfitted with a 1.9-liter Volkswagen TDI-PD motor, next week in Las Vegas at the 2010 SEMA Show. Designed as a retrofit kit for the AX-5 equipped YJ, HPA has developed a bolt-on adapter package to facilitate the TDI engine conversion.
This unique motor transplant delivers V8-like torque in a lightweight 4-cylinder format, and with fuel economy in the 40-47 mpg range, provides durable, long-range performance for exploring the back country.
A very efficient motor with impressive fuel economy and low emissions, the Volkswagen TDI-PD motor generates 100 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque in its stock form. Tuned with an HPA Power Flash and Air-to-Water Intercooler, the motor used in the HPA Jeep conversion produces 165 hp and 285 lbs-ft of torque; ideal for off-road climbing conditions.
To further enhance the YJ’s appearance and off-road capabilities, the vehicle has been furnished with 4-inch lift kit, XHD front bumper with stinger, synthetic rope winch, skid plates, and other accessories from Rugged Ridge; Alloy USA Dana axles with Eaton differentials; 4.10:1 ring and pinion set from Precision Gear; Metal Cloak body armor; Garvin racks; Magnaflow exhaust; xenon lighting from Hella; Corbeau seats; stereo equipment from Sony; Pro Comp wheels with 35” Goodyear tires; and more.
