Porsche Panamera Takes Brand's Top Sales Title in USA Last Month
The Porsche Panamera went on sale half way through October of 2009 and the car has been gaining popularity here in the States ever since. In fact, in April of 2010 it officially took the lead in Porsche's official sales figures. Congratulations, Panamera, and also to all 678 people who bought one last month.
Now, here's where we lay down the caveats. Sports car sales are way down, a long-lasting result of the tougher times we've been slowing rising out of. Boxster and Cayman sales, while up slightly over last April, are still a small 219 and 135 units, respectively. 911 sales took a pretty hard hit, falling 42 percent versus last year, to 389 units. Customer interest was likely at a high point early last year following the mid-cycle refresh that added things like direct injection and better infotainment options. Meanwhile, the Cayenne is being phased out in preparation of an all-new generation coming soon. Porsche's former sales leader took a 63 percent hit, falling to 326 examples.
Still, it's great news for Porsche that the Panamera is off to early success, and it's even greater that the new sedan is seeing that success now when all of the brand's other vehicles are struggling to move off of dealer lots. So long as the profits are rolling in, Porsche will be able to green-light projects like the fantastic Boxster Spyder and the 911 GT2 RS leaked earlier today.
